Join Us for Our First Annual Quiet Mile
and 14th Anniversary Celebration
Sunday, October 27, 2-6 PM
285 Meadowlark Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106
What: Celebration of Poetry and Short Fiction with community open mic readings, refreshments, and the first Quiet Mile (details below)
Should you bring anything: The park has lots of covered seating, but feel free to bring collapsible chairs. Press 53 will provide water, sparkling water, and some late afternoon cake. Otherwise, bring your own snacks and beverages. We will also provide a microphone and speakers for the readings. Other on-site amenities include restrooms, ample parking, a playground, fields, walking trails, and a dog park.
A Note on the Readings: There will be no set schedule. We anticipate a mixture of aspiring and established writers. Basically, if you have some poetry or short fiction (sorry no novels or memoir) you’d like to read, this is a great opportunity to share your work with an audience of readers in a friendly atmosphere. Readers will be limited to one page of poetry or short fiction at a time. However, there is no limit on how many times readers can read. We just want to keep the readers rotating as long as there is interest.
The Quiet Mile:
Anyone can tell you that life is full of noise and distraction. Anyone can suggest you put your phone down, turn the TV off, get outside, read more, carve out some me time. Just think for a little while. Here’s a great opportunity to do it.
Jamison Park is on a beautiful section of greenway along Muddy Creek, and at 4:00 p.m., we will venture out on the trails for a mile stroll in total silence. No other rules, just be quiet and spend half an hour or so letting your mind wander where it will. There will be ½ mile turnaround signs in every paved direction, so your route is up to you. The walk will not be timed, and everyone wins.
On-site registration only, but registration is NOT REQUIRED.
The walk is open to anyone, but an optional $20 registration is available which includes a t-shirt and a Press 53 book of your choice. T-shirts will be for sale for $15, as will a selection of Press 53 titles which begin at $14.95. Again, there are no requirements other than silence, but, if your coordination allows, feel free to read as you walk. Walking with poetry or prose can often yield an enhanced response. Ask for recommendations!
